The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral (CGRS D) program is committed to identifying and supporting exceptional doctoral students who demonstrate outstanding potential in research, innovation, and creative scholarship. By offering robust funding for high-caliber research training, the program fosters academic excellence and encourages contributions that create lasting impact within academia and in the broader community.


The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship — Doctoral (CGRS D), part of the Canada Research Training Awards Suite (CRTAS), is jointly administered by CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC. It provides $40,000 per year for up to 36 months, tenable at eligible Canadian or international institutions. This funding supports advanced research training to develop skills, foster creativity, and prepare scholars to contribute to Canada’s research community, economy, and society.


Covering health, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, as well as interdisciplinary fields, the CGRS D enables doctoral students to focus on their studies, work with leading mentors, and make lasting research contributions. Awards are granted through a competitive selection process.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for application, you must have completed no more than 36 months of full-time equivalent study in:



  • A doctoral program,

  • The PhD portion of a joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (e.g., MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD), or

  • A joint graduate program (e.g., MA/PhD, MSc/PhD, MBA/PhD)


by December 31 of the year in which you are applying.


Note: If you are also eligible for the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship — Master’s (CGRS M) program, you may increase your total potential funding by applying to the CGRS M for your first year of doctoral study instead of the CGRS D program. You are responsible for selecting the correct program for your application. Refer to Other Restrictions below for further details.
