Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship, applicants must meet a range of eligibility requirements that reflect the scheme’s commitment to academic excellence, equal opportunity, and global development. Below is a detailed overview of who can apply:



  • You must be a citizen or hold permanent residency in a Commonwealth country.

  • Applicants who are refugees or are British Protected Persons are also eligible to apply.

  • You must hold an undergraduate honours degree, typically with at least an upper second-class (2:1) classification or equivalent.

  • For applicants intending to pursue a PhD, you must additionally possess a relevant Master’s degree that demonstrates your readiness for advanced research.

  • You must demonstrate that you are unable to afford to study in the UK without financial assistance. This scholarship is designed to support those who do not have the personal or family means to cover tuition and living costs abroad.

  • Professional or voluntary experience in a development-related sector may be required or considered an asset, depending on the specific scholarship stream.

  • In some cases, you may be required to provide a development impact statement, showing how your studies will benefit your home country or region.

  • You must be available to start your academic programme in the UK at the beginning of the academic year (typically September/October).

  • You must not be currently living or studying in a high-income country.

  • You may need to meet specific English language requirements set by the host university.

  • Each scholarship and fellowship programme may have its own additional eligibility requirements, so it is important to check the criteria for the specific award you are applying for.
