The Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship celebrates exceptional academic achievement among graduate students in Alberta. It was created to attract and support top talents including international students to pursue their studies in the province.

The University of Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship is valued at $12,000, awarded as a one-time payment to successful recipients. This generous financial support is designed to help students cover tuition fees, living expenses, or research-related costs during their studies.

To receive the award, students must have an active Canadian bank account and ensure their Alberta mailing address is correctly updated in Bear Tracks. Without these details, the payment cannot be processed.

This scholarship not only provides financial relief but also recognizes students’ hard work and academic excellence, allowing them to focus more on their research, professional growth, and contributions to the university community.

To qualify for the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship, applicants must meet specific requirements. Eligible candidates may be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons as defined under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. International students holding a valid study permit are also welcome to apply.

The scholarship is open to students enrolled in both course-based and thesis-based programs. Applicants must be pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree, although graduate certificate students may also qualify if their program can be used to ladder into a master’s degree.

Applicants must be living in Alberta while enrolled, regardless of whether classes are taken online or in person. Current students must be registered full-time during the Fall 2024 and/or Winter 2025 terms, while newly admitted students beginning in January 2025 must be registered full-time in the Winter 2025 term. Students registered with Student Accessibility Services, or those with documented accommodation needs, may still be eligible provided they are enrolled in at least 40% of a full course load.

Academic excellence is a key requirement and must be demonstrated in one or more ways. Students should hold a minimum GPA of 3.3 over the most recent 15 credits of coursework in their current program. If fewer than 15 credits are available, the Admission GPA (AGPA) will be considered. For newly admitted students without graded coursework, the AGPA will be used. Candidates may also demonstrate excellence through significant research or academic contributions such as published manuscripts, presentations, exhibitions, performances, or community engagement. A strong record of scholarly achievement through awards, scholarships, and prizes is also considered.

Applicants must also be within the appropriate years of their program to qualify. Master’s students must be in years one to four of their program, while doctoral students must be in years one to six. Students who transfer from a master’s program to a doctoral program will have their time in the master’s program counted toward the doctoral program’s time limits.
